American Red Cross Lifeguards

Lifeguarding

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.

On completion of the course Particpants will each recieve two American Red Cross Universal Certificates-one indicating Lifegfuarding/First Aid, which is valid for 3 years, and another indicating CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, which is valid for 1 year.

Course prerequisites:

To be eligible for the Lifeguarding course, the participant must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course. Participants are also required to successfully complete a skills test on the first day to be able to complete the course.

Guardstart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow

Guardstart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow

Get a jump start on securing a future job as a lifeguard by completing the Red Cross GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow programs!  Learn what it takes to be a great lifeguard. The experience you gain through Guardstart will help you get ready to take Lifeguard Training. The course focuses on five key areas: Prevention of aquatic accidents, Fitness and swimming skills, Response in an emergency, Leadership skills, Professionalism.

Course prerequisites:

 Before entering Guardstart, participants must be able to demonstrate the following skills -
  • Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
  • Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs.
  • Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater.

Safety Training for Swim Coaches

In conjunction with USA Swimming the American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches course educates participants in the areas of responsible coaching, safety awareness in competitive swimming, emergency planning and response, common injuries, medical conditions and dealing with life threatening or hazardous situations in and around the water. Every Swim coach should have this. Successful participants will recieve a 3 year certification. 

Course prerequisites: Participants must be comforatble in chest-deep water.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer 

Aimed at Lifeguards or emergency personnel, this course combines a participant’s manual, lectures and video with hands-on skills training to cover the following areas: Responding to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants. Using an AED on an adult or child victim of cardiac arrest, using personal protective equipment to stop blood Bourne pathogens and other diseases from spreading. Lifeguards needing to re-certifiy for the summer should sign up for this course.

Red Cross Challenge courses 

Challenge course are designed for participants who already possess the skills and knowledge and need only to demonstrate the skills and knowledge to an instructor to earn American Red Cross certifications. Challenge will vary depending on which certification you need.

Challenge course fee: Member $25  Resident $30  Non-Resident $40
