American Red Cross Lifeguard Courses
Brushy Creek is proud to be an authorized provider of American Red Cross programs.
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.
On completion of the course Particpants will each recieve two American Red Cross Universal Certificates-one indicating Lifegfuarding/First Aid, which is valid for 3 years, and another indicating CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, which is valid for 1 year.
Course prerequisites:
To be eligible for the Lifeguarding course, the participant must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course. Participants are also required to successfully complete a skills test on the first day to be able to complete the course.
Course length: 31.25 hrs total
Registration begins December 8th for March course, and March 7th for Spring and Summer courses.

American Red Cross Guardstart
American Red Cross Guardstart is a program designed to guide youth to the AmericanRed Cross Lifeguarding program by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards. This foundation consists of five catagories: Prevention, Fitness, Response, Leadership and Professionalism. The Guardstart program does not give the participants the information amd skills to be certified in First Aid, CPR or AED or as a lifeguard.
The Guardstart program will introduce participants to -
- The skills needed for entry into the entry to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course.
- Communication and decision-making skills
- The basic responsibilities of a lifeguard
Course pre-requistes:
The course is designed for youth 11 years old, or who have completed the 5th grade, through 14 years old. Before entering Guardstart, participants must be able to demonstrate the following skills -
- Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
- Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs.
- Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater.
Registration begins (BCCC Members only) February 24th - March 6th. (Everyone else) March 7th onwards
