PFAS, PFOS, and Lithium Reductions

Estimated Time Frame: This project is in the evaluation phase and is anticipated to be completed in summer 2027.

Description: The District has completed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-mandated Fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 5) testing for 29 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and lithium. UCMR 5 sampling detected PFAS in the District's groundwater supply. However, finished water sampling at the Water Treatment Facility did not exceed the EPA maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). While current finished water quality indicates compliance with PFAS regulations, additional evaluation is necessary to assess long-term exceedance risk under varying operating conditions and future regulatory requirements. The purpose of this evaluation phase is to further test and evaluate the occurrence of PFAS within the District’s water system and develop a compliance strategy. The evaluation will include additional sampling to better characterize PFAS concentrations within the groundwater supply and treatment process, a utility assessment, and the development of a compliance plan to determine whether additional treatment or operational modifications will be required to maintain compliance with EPA PFAS regulations.

Impact to the Community: There will be no impact to the community during the evaluation phase. Once the initial phase is complete, the Board of Directors will receive a report summarizing the findings and options for compliance.
