Brushy Creek Pools : Swim Lessons : Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring?

  • Towel, sunscreen, hair in a pony tail (if possible), and goggles.
  • Parents enrolled in Parent & Child classes please have your child in swim diapers.
  • Life jackets are not needed during swim lessons.

What should I prepare for?

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes before the swim lesson starts and check-in with the pool staff.
  • Please allow time after each lesson for us to communicate with you how your child is doing and what skills we are working towards.

What should I do if I see lightening or hear thunder?

We will close pools for 30 minutes after the last sighting of lightening or hearing thunder. If you are in doubt about the weather you can call the pool at which your lesson is scheduled to confirm if class will be canceled.

How long will it take for my child to learn how to swim?

Every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Babies and toddlers who have had positive water experiences early tend to develop faster. Older children learn to swim and develop their skills faster also if they have had positive water experiences in the past as well. Learning to swim is not a skill that you can learn in just a few lessons, it requires time to develop and practice. To give your child the best chance at swimming success we recommend practicing outside of lessons and continuing lessons throughout their childhood.

Can I get in the water with my child?

Yes, however for Parent & Child lessons only.  With Preschool, and Learn to Swim classes often times children are distracted by their parents even though the parents are trying to help.

Can I drop my child off and pick them up after the lesson?

If your child is 12 or under, you must stay in the pool area during the lesson.

What if my child refuses to get in the water or cries the whole time?

We will make every attempt to encourage your child to come in the pool if your child is not fond of the water.  However, if your child will not participate at all in the swim lesson, please contact the Head Swim Instructor at swimlessons@bcmud.org to determine the best course of action.

Positive talk about the lesson before you arrive will help get your child mentally ready for this new adventure.

What if my child can't attend a class?

We do not offer makeup classes. For weather and other types of cancellations on our side, we offer refunds for those specific lessons. You can apply for a refund or transfer up to a week before the class starts.

Are your Swim Instructor's CPR/AED/First Aid Certified?

Yes, all Swim Instructors are CPR/AED & First Aid Certified by the American Red Cross.

Does my child have to wear a swim suit?

Yes, swimsuits are required.  No jean shorts, or other material other than swimsuit material. Rashguards and leggings can be worn as needed
